Pictures become lonely without words to set the stage and motion to make the experience immersive. Juxtaposition, context, contrasts, similarities are all part of the arsenal of the communicator.
Q: How many writers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: It's not really a change...as much as it's a transformation. There's got to be some kind of emotional trigger to motivate the bulb to want to change.
I'm a word masseuse. From taglines to thought leadership articles and children's books to video scripts and many things in between, I massage a narrative. I take scientific data that is dense and complex and make it understandable to customers and stakeholders.
From my roots in cinema, I've sought to create a mood with lighting or transmit an idea through a composition. Video editing takes this further by careful use of transitions, shot duration, voiceover and music tracks.
If you can't say it with words, say it with illustrations. Kicking a video off with motion graphics or animation is a great way to set the stage and spark the imagination. There are many instances where an instructor or a story doesn't really come alive without graphic support.
Designing websites from scratch to deployment requires a mix of creativity and IT knowledge. It also entails knowing a client and understanding what their customers are looking for. I like to pose this question: "What was a visitor doing right before they entered the site and what should they know before they exit?"
My work as a cinematographer in film and television has earned many awards including Emmys and an Oscar nomination for the documentary "Legacy." I've traveled the U.S. and the world filming rain forests and volcanoes and celebrities. I've filmed, written and produced commercials, training films, company branding projects, fund raisers and narrative.
